Sometimes, something absolutely bananas happens. Today, I received my copy of the book which I have a chapter in, written with my colleagues Jude Brereton, Helena Daffern and Michael Lovedee-Turner. Gender in Music Production brings together contributions by a range of authors exploring the intersection of gender and music technology, and whilst our chapter (titled "Addressing Gender Equality in Music Production: Current Challenges, Opportunities for Change, and Recommendations") touched on the factors which have contributed to the state of the industry's bias, our main concern was exploring options for change and providing some concrete recommendations on what to do next.
Such recommendations included:
Using a data-driven approach to understanding the problem, including gathering data on participation, underlying factors, and the effectiveness of interventions;
Changing the culture within music production by setting goals, having the majority group drive the change, and adopting a zero-tolerance approach towards sexual harassment and microaggressions, including a robust reporting mechanism;
Establishing a code of best practice to address interventions and intentional diversity, and embedding this within the requirements of accreditation bodies;
Developing the educational side of music production to help develop and encourage the next generation to be more gender-inclusive.
